Boat Captain: Butch Harris

Fee: $125

Description

Machias Seal Island has the largest Atlantic Puffin colony on the Maine coast. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we will boat for about an hour and a half from the shore to the Island and then cruise closely around the Island and in its surrounding waters. Due to COVID-19, landing on the Island is not permitted this year, but as always there will be excellent opportunities to view the island’s nesting and visiting birds.

The avian population on the Island during late May includes Atlantic Puffin, Razorbill, Arctic and Common Terns, Common Murre, Black Guillemot, and Common Eider. Other seabirds, such as Northern Gannet, Black-legged Kittiwake, gulls, shearwaters, and storm-petrels may sometimes be sighted on the way to the Island. Bald Eagle and both Gray and Harbor Seals are spotted regularly and sightings of whales and porpoises are possible.

The trip will take place on a Coast-Guard–certified passenger vessel. On the boat, the number of passengers will be limited, and we ask that people follow CDC guidelines. The boat is mostly open, so there will be good ventilation, but social distancing to six feet will not be possible.

Wear sturdy, non-slippery footwear. Bring warm clothing and be prepared for wind, rain, and spray; dressing in layers is a good idea. Be prepared for rolling seas. Bring binoculars and cameras with telephoto capability. You may also want to bring sunscreen, a snack, and a bottle of water.

If the trip is canceled due to poor weather, high seas, or low registrations, you will receive a full refund.
