Description
This evening event in the Edmunds unit of Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is timed especially for observing the fascinating courtship flight of the American Woodcock. We will caravan in our own cars and park in various spots along the dirt road, visiting areas managed specifically by Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to provide habitat for this bird. Maurry will describe management of various habitats in the Refuge to benefit early successional species, along with Moosehorn’s history of American Woodcock research and management. These same areas also provide homes to more than fifty other species. This property is also home to bear, coyote, deer, porcupine, Ruffed Grouse, snowshoe hare and many other species.
Locations along the trail will be chosen to facilitate wildlife sightings, and there may be a short hike to get near to a Woodcock display area. Bring a warm layer and bring a headlamp or flashlight, as it will be after sunset when we return.
