Sebastian Teunissen
We are thrilled to introduce Cobscook Community Learning Center’s new Executive Director, Sebastian Teunissen. His first day on campus will be August 26, 2019. He is eager to spend time over the coming months getting to know CCLC staff and meeting our dedicated friends and supporters.
Sebastian comes to CCLC with experience in many sectors. He has worked in government, academe, the private sector and with non-profit organizations. Most recently, Sebastian served as Managing Director for Solidaridad, a global nongovernment organization focused on enhancing the sustainability of smallholder agriculture around the world.
His academic experience includes business faculty positions at the University of California, Berkeley, Duke University, and at the University of Guelph in Canada, where he still holds an adjunct professorship. Sebastian’s international experience includes time as a senior official in the Department of Finance of the government of Papua New Guinea; as general manager of a company in Japan; and has taught at universities in Australia, Chile, and Hungary.
Some years ago, during a visit Downeast, Sebastian discovered a deep connection with the region and eventually bought a home on Campobello Island. Since then, he has become increasingly involved in the local community. He is excited about bringing this passion to CCLC, building on its history and contributions, and collaborating with CCLC’s board, staff and partners to bring CCLC forward into its next chapter.
Board President, David Ray shares: “Our original founder and executive director, Alan Furth, guided CCLC from a community-based initiative into a regional and nationally recognized leader in developing and providing innovative educational opportunities. Sebastian brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and connections that will broaden and strengthen CCLC’s reach and impact. We are very excited about the future of CCLC under Sebastian’s leadership.”
CCLC started as a single circle of inspired volunteers in 1999, and today is an organization with a staff of seventeen, a strong governance board, a beautiful campus and retreat center, and three major program areas: Transforming Rural Experience in Education (TREE); Cobscook Experiential Programs (Cobscook); and Cobscook Learning & Retreat Center.
The CCLC Board of Directors is excited about CCLC’s future and looks forward to working together with Sebastian, staff, partners, supporters, foundations, and donors to continue the organization’s contributions through its mission of creating responsive educational opportunities that strengthen personal, community, and global well-being.
